Thanksgiving and Fall Rustic Art Keepsakes

As a cooler wind blows and autumn leaves blanket the forest floor we’ve been settling into fall in Kinderland. We’ve been harvesting from our school garden and even had a Thanksgiving Feast put on by our amazing parent school council. We offer many learning opportunities in our class that are reggio-inspired, but when it comes to holidays, we hear from parents how holiday art become keepsakes for families for years to come. So we provide both options. Today we’re sharing 3 keepsakes we’ve done over the years.

Rustic Wood Pumpkins: We cut up some scrap wood and used wood glue for the stem. We invited the children decorate their  pumpkins with fall colours. We anticipated that children would make jack-o-lantern faces and were surprised when they used their new learning about patterning. How amazing!

Process Art Pumpkin: First, we invited children to draw a pumpkin on a piece of wood and paint it. Once dry, children used their creativity to add buttons, twine, gems, etc.

“Your Little Acorn” Handprint Wall-Hanging: This nature-inspired art piece has been well loved by parents as it is a reminder of how little their child’s handprint once was. We used a painting drop cloth from Home Depot as the main fabric and cut out little acorn hats from scrap fabric(reminds me of grandma’s chesterfield). We glued on a stick from the forest, added twine, and voila, a keepsake for years to come.

Hoping you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and fall with your students, families, and friends!
