Inquiry-based Learning / Outdoor Learning / All Things Play
My name is Mel Jill Maxwell, and I am currently a Junior and Senior Kindergarten Teacher at Irwin Memorial Public School in Dwight, Ontario. My DECE, Sarah Cripps, and I fiercely believe that our young learners are capable, competent, creative, and resourceful. Together we facilitate the learning and discovery in a room our school proudly calls Kinderland. Kinderland is a reggio-inspired learning environment with a focus on inquiry and play-based learning. Our program balances explicit teaching and self-selection with intentional materials. Kinderland is designed with the environment as the third teacher with opportunities for exploration, discovery and wondering in provocations. We continually change these invitations for learning as our learner’s interests and wonderings evolve. We are passionate about delivering a rich program where our learners bump into math and literacy throughout their day. Being present, all there, and building relationships is central to how we strive to meet the needs of all our learners. I am apart of a mighty team in each of my student’s lives.
