Hi! I’m Mel J Maxwell
My name is Mel Jill Maxwell, and I am currently a Junior and Senior Kindergarten Teacher at Irwin Memorial Public School in Dwight, Ontario. My DECE, Sarah Cripps, and I fiercely believe that our young learners are capable, competent, creative, and resourceful. Together we facilitate the learning and discovery in a room our school proudly calls Kinderland. Kinderland is a reggio-inspired learning environment with a focus on inquiry and play-based learning. Our program balances explicit teaching and self-selection with intentional materials. Kinderland is designed with the environment as the third teacher with opportunities for exploration, discovery and wondering in provocations. We continually change these invitations for learning as our learner’s interests and wonderings evolve. We are passionate about delivering a rich program where our learners bump into math and literacy throughout their day. Being present, all there, and building relationships is central to how we strive to meet the needs of all our learners. I am apart of a mighty team in each of my student’s lives.

  1. Hello Mel,

My name is Alana Sajatovic and I am a student in the Master of Teaching program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). A component of this degree program involves conducting a small-scale qualitative research study.

My research will focus on the integration of curriculum-related outdoor learning experiences into the teaching practices of educators in Ontario. I am interested in interviewing teachers committed to implementing outdoor learning as a means of teaching the Ontario curriculum. I am hoping to interview participants who meet the following criteria:
    • Participants must be involved in typical public or private school classroom functioning and activities on a day-to-day basis
    • Participants must have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience
    • Participants must demonstrate a commitment to effectively and meaningfully implementing integrated outdoor learning with students

After perusing your blog “Inspired by Play”, I feel that you may be an ideal participant for my study, and that your knowledge and experience would provide valuable insights into this topic. If you feel that you meet these criteria and are interested in participating in my study, I would be happy to provide you with more detailed information. Your participation in this research would involve one 45-60 minute face-to-face interview, which would be audio-recorded and transcribed.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Alana Sajatovic
